Welcome
Welcome to Kashmir Boutique Berlin, where every thread tells a story and each piece shows the skill of many generations. I am Majid Sultani, the founder. For more than 30 years, I have dedicated myself to sourcing and sharing the authentic beauty of Kashmiri and North Indian handicrafts.
After spending many years at Berlin's lively and vibrant artisan markets, I opened Kashmir Boutique to give these timeless treasures a permanent home. My philosophy rests on three simple ideas: dependable quality, genuine craft, and strong support for the artisans. We work directly and fairly with skilled craftspeople in Kashmir so ensuring that their ancient techniques are preserved and their communities are empowered.
Every item you see here, from the luxurious shawl to the smallest hand painted ornament is a piece of living history, carefully crafted by hand and filled with the spirit of its maker. We invite you to explore our collection and enjoy the lasting magic of true craftsmanship.
The Soul of Our Craft - Artisanal Heritage
A Bridge Between Cultures
Our collection is more than just products—it's a way to connect the deep artistic traditions of the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the world. We celebrate skills that have been passed down through generations, from teacher to student. Here, we highlight two of Kashmir's most loved art forms.
Papier-Mâché: An Art with a Legendary Past
It is said that the art of papier-mâché came to Kashmir in the 14th century with a Persian mystic named Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani. This craft, once called Kar-i-Qalamdan (meaning "the art of the pen case"), begins with shaping recycled paper pulp (Sakhtsazi), followed by detailed, hand-done painting (Naqashi).
The result is beautiful objects that are light to hold but strong enough to last. Each piece is hand-painted with patterns inspired by Kashmir's natural beauty—like the famous chinar leaf, soft almond flowers, and colorful birds. Today, only a few master artisans still keep this tradition alive. That's why every painted box, vase, or ornament in our boutique is not only handmade—it's a rare and special piece of Kashmir's history. When you hold one, you hold a piece of Kashmir's heart.
Exquisite Embroidery: The Threads of Tradition
Kashmiri fabrics are famous around the world, especially because of their beautiful hand embroidery. At our boutique, you'll find items made with two traditional embroidery styles: Sozni (a fine, single-needle stitch) and Aari (a chain stitch done with a hooked needle).
One Pashmina shawl decorated with Sozni embroidery can take months or even years to complete. The designs tell stories through their patterns: swirling paisleys (botteh), blooming lotuses, and curling vines that remind us of old Mughal gardens. Aari embroidery, also known as crewel work, adds rich texture to clothes and home décor like jackets and wall hangings. Wearing a real Kashmiri embroidered shawl means wearing a piece of art—a tradition of care, detail, and beauty that's more than 600 years old.
